THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE ADOPTING A KITTEN
Adopting a kitten is a big decision and should be approached with careful thought and preparation. Here are some key points to keep in mind before you adopt:
Waiting Lists: Kittens are sometimes adopted from approved waiting lists. While this may seem inconvenient, it’s actually a positive sign. Patience is crucial to ensure you receive a healthy, well-socialized kitten from a responsible breeder.
Breeder Interaction: A reputable breeder will ask you detailed questions and get to know you as a potential owner. This is a good sign—they should care about where their kittens are going. The process should never feel like a quick, impersonal transaction. Expect to fill out an adoption application, undergo a phone interview, suggested training and research, and perhaps even a screening process. This shows the breeder is invested in placing their kittens in the right homes.
Shipping Concerns: Kittens should never be shipped as cargo, as this can be extremely stressful and unsafe for them. Ideally, arrange to pick up your kitten in person. Empire Maine Coons will not ship kittens. We prefer to meet the family/person that adopts our babies.
Health Concerns After Adoption: Sometimes kittens may develop minor illnesses, like upper respiratory infections, after joining a new home due to the stress of relocation. It’s important to contact the breeder immediately if this happens and seek veterinary care. Your contract should outline the breeder's responsibility in such situations. A reputable breeder will never allow a sick kitten to leave their care. For more information please click the link below.
